SUNDAS MOHI-TRUONGDIRECTOR OF ORCHESTRASSundas Mohi-Truong is the Director of Orchestras at Klein Cain High School. She began playing the viola at the age of 10, and is a proud product of Texas music education programs. She received her bachelor's degree in Music Education from the University of Texas at San Antonio. She graduated summa cum laude with Highest Honors, and received the performer's certificate on viola. During her time at UTSA, Mrs. Mohi-Truong became deeply involved in the UTSA String Project, a program that allows the opportunity for music education students to teach string instruments to San Antonio area children. In 2013, she was asked to lead the downtown campus String Project under the guidance of Dr. Eugene Dowdy and Dr. Kristen Pellegrino. Prior to her current appointment at Klein Cain, Mrs. Mohi-Truong was head orchestra director at Paetow High School in Katy ISD, and also served as Assistant Director of Orchestras at Tompkins High School in Katy ISD. Under her direction, the Klein Cain Orchestra Program has grown from 160 to over 230 students since 2020, and has achieved many awards and honors, including The Foundation for Music Education Mark of Excellence National Winner in 2021 & 2022, TMEA Honor String Orchestra Finalist in 2023, and Midwest Clinic Invited String Orchestra in 2023.
As a second-generation immigrant, Mrs. Mohi-Truong is passionate about helping students find the right path for themselves in high school and beyond. She strongly believes that students should pursue their passions and that there is always room for music in one’s life. Mrs. Mohi-Truong has presented research on this topic in a presentation titled “The GPA Game: Advocacy for Academically Consumed Students” at the 2020 ASTA National Conference, as well as Texas Music Educators Association convention and the Texas Orchestra Directors Association conference. She has also been invited to present work on beginning string curriculum and music theory studies at state and national conferences. Outside of her work as orchestra director, Mrs. Mohi-Truong has served as a director for Katy Youth Symphony, has been invited to serve as conductor of Region Orchestras in Texas, is an active freelance violist, and has served as an officer for the TMEA Region 23 Orchestra Division for three years. She is also a board member for the Texas Orchestra Directors Association and the American String Teachers Association. Mrs. Mohi-Truong resides in Katy with her husband and their cats, Dobby & Remus. In her spare time, she loves baking, kickboxing, and trying new coffee spots around town with her husband. HANSON YONGASSISTANT ORCHESTRA DIRECTORHanson Yong is the Assistant Director of Orchestras at Klein Cain. He started playing the double bass in 6th grade and grew up in Plano, TX. He was a 4-year TMEA All Stater through high school and was a member of the Greater Dallas Youth Orchestra. He recently graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a degree in Music Studies. While at UT, Mr. Yong was on faculty with the UT String Project, teaching double bass, violin, cello, orchestra, and music theory to students ranging in age from 3 to 18. Mr. Yong’s classroom experience includes Pearson Ranch Middle School in Round Rock ISD, McNeil High School in Round Rock ISD, and elementary strings at UT Elementary School in Austin. He is also a member of the Texas Music Educators Association, the Texas Orchestra Directors Association, the American String Teachers Association and the Suzuki Association of the Americas.
Mr. Yong believes that studying music is important in developing lifelong skills that build responsible citizens and good humans. He believes that by teaching music we can teach broader ideas about what it means to be a good person to oneself and others. It is through musical collaboration and appreciation that individuals can better understand themselves, the people they encounter, and the world around them. Outside of orchestra, Mr. Yong enjoys rooting for his favorite NBA team, the Boston Celtics, watching live music, and collecting vintage clothes. |
